What career paths are available after completing PBA programmes?
Depends which programme and track. Protocol and Substrate track graduates are well positioned for roles at Parity, the Polkadot Fellowship, system parachain teams, and a small number of external protocol-level projects. DApp and smart contract track graduates move into smart contract development, full-stack Web3 engineering, and DAO tooling roles, including on ecosystems beyond Polkadot, since roughly 75% of the technical curriculum transfers to other scalable blockchain architectures.
Non-technical track graduates – governance, policy, and ecosystem – have found roles in DAO operations, Web3 foundation work, regulatory advisory, and ecosystem business development. According to our August 2024 census, 59% of PBA Campus alumni are contributing as developers in some capacity. With the modular credential system now live, the range of roles that PBA education maps to has expanded significantly beyond protocol engineering.
How is PBA different from other blockchain education programmes?
The curriculum is written and delivered by people who built the protocol. That is not a marketing claim, it means that when Polkadot changes, the instructors who teach it are often the people who changed it. No MOOC platform has that relationship.
Beyond instructor quality, PBA is academic in structure rather than bootcamp in orientation. The goal is deep understanding of underlying principles, not a checklist of tools. The new modular system extends this to learners who don’t need the full protocol track, so a policymaker studying governance mechanics or an EVM developer learning the Hub gets the same depth of reasoning, applied to their context.
What happens after the Academy?
Active alumni get priority access to new credentials as they launch, discounted enrolment, and a recommended credential path that reflects how Polkadot has evolved since their cohort. There is an alumni community across Discord and other channels, and periodic re-engagement through ecosystem events. For PBA Campus graduates, the alumni network is the primary route into hiring within the Polkadot ecosystem.

Should founders or non-developers apply?
Yes, and not just as a consolation entry point.
The credential system now includes a dedicated governance and mechanism design track, a policy and regulatory track, and an identity and proof-of-personhood credential, none of which require programming experience. Agile Coretime economics, OpenGov treasury mechanics, the 2.1B DOT supply cap, and MiCA compliance are live topics that directly affect founders, investors, and policymakers. There is substantive content here for non-technical learners, not just an overview.
PBA Campus remains developer-only in its technical tracks. But the online credentials – particularly Blockchain Foundations, Web3 Governance & Mechanism Design, and Identity & Personhood – are designed for exactly the founder or ecosystem professional who does not want a 200-hour Rust course.
What certification will I receive?
It depends on the programme and credential level.
Micro-credential completions come with a named, dated certificate specific to that credential. For technical credentials (Substrate Runtime, Building on Polkadot Hub, Cross-Chain Systems), the GitHub submission is itself a primary proof of skill, linked from the certificate.
From Phase 2 onward, credentials are also issued on-chain via Polkadot Hub, an NFT-based verifiable credential that any employer or DAO can check without contacting PBA. This is not available through traditional institutions.
PBA Campus graduates receive the full PBA graduation certificate, which remains the most recognised qualification in the Polkadot ecosystem.
PBA-X
What is happening to PBA-X?
PBA-X is transitioning into a modular credential system. Instead of one cohort programme covering everything, there are now nine standalone micro-credentials organised around specific learner outcomes and job roles. You can complete one credential and stop, or stack them into a full programme track.
The three programme tracks are: Polkadot Systems Engineer (protocol and runtime development), Polkadot dApp Builder (smart contract and Web3 application development), and Web3 Systems Thinker (governance, policy, and ecosystem roles).
I'm currently partway through PBA-X. What happens to my progress?
Your progress carries forward. Every module you have completed maps to a corresponding micro-credential in the new system. You will not be asked to restart.
For modules that covered content now flagged as critically outdated – specifically smart contracts, tokenomics, system chain architecture, and OpenGov – you will be asked to complete a short gap assessment (30–60 minutes per affected module) to earn the updated verifiable credential. This is not a retake; it is a check on the new material that Polkadot shipped between late 2025 and early 2026.
You can either complete your current cohort as planned and convert on graduation, or pause and resume under the new structure with full credit for work already done. The default is to finish your cohort unless you choose otherwise.
I completed PBA-X. Is my certificate still valid?
Yes. PBA-X certificates are not converted, downgraded, or replaced. Your credential is documented within the new system as a recognised PBA-X qualification.
You will also receive a recommended top-up path, typically two to three micro-credentials that bring your qualification current with Polkadot’s 2026 architecture (PolkaVM, Agile Coretime, Polkadot Hub, the 2.1B supply cap, Individuality). This is a recommendation, not a requirement. You can pick up any or all of it at 40% alumni rate, with no expiry on that discount.
I started PBA-X but didn't finish. Is there a way back in?
Yes, and the new structure is a better fit for how you learn than the original cohort model was.
Modules you completed before leaving are recognised as partial credit toward the corresponding micro-credentials, subject to gap assessments where the content has changed. You will receive a personalised summary of which credentials you are already partway toward earning.
Drop-offs also receive one free micro-credential of their choice, redeemable within 90 days of the Summit launch, plus the standard 40% alumni rate on all others.
Does completing credentials guarantee a place in PBA Campus?
No, but it strengthens your application significantly. Completing two or more micro-credentials is now the recommended preparation for Campus admission, not because it is required, but because it is the clearest signal of readiness the admissions process can evaluate.
Campus applicants still need to pass track-specific entrance assessments. For the Protocol track: advanced Rust plus basic Solidity. For the DApps track: advanced TypeScript plus basic Rust and Solidity.
What student experience does the online credential system offer?
Each credential has an online community space for questions and peer discussion. Technical credentials include guided lab environments and GitHub submission workflows. Governance and policy credentials include scenario-based assessments using real OpenGov referenda.
There are no mandatory cohort timings for self-paced credentials. You work through them at your own pace and attempt the skill-check when you are ready.
Who can enroll in online credentials?
There are no entry requirements for the open-entry credentials: Blockchain Foundations, Web3 Governance & Mechanism Design, and Identity & Personhood. If you want to start there and see whether Polkadot is worth going deeper on, you can.
Intermediate credentials have recommended prerequisites noted on their pages, not gates, but guidance on what prior knowledge makes the content productive rather than frustrating.
Transition and Recognition
When does the new system go live?
The first three credentials – Blockchain Foundations, Cryptography Essentials, and Web3 Governance & Mechanism Design – are available for enrolment from the Web3 Summit launch. The remaining six credentials roll out through Q3 2026, with all nine live by end of year.
Existing PBA-X learners and alumni are contacted before the public launch with their specific options. If you are in either group and have not received that communication, contact us directly.
How do on-chain credentials work?
From Phase 2 onward, credential completions are issued as verifiable on-chain records on Polkadot Hub. These are NFT-based and publicly verifiable, meaning any employer, DAO, or governance body can confirm your credential without going through PBA. For technical credentials, the on-chain record links directly to your GitHub submission, so what you built is part of the credential.
This is a capability that no traditional educational institution can replicate. A PDF certificate says you passed. An on-chain credential shows what you built and where it lives.
PBA Campus
What is PBA Campus?
PBA Campus is the in-person flagship programme. It runs for approximately 2.5 weeks and offers two technical tracks: Protocol (on-chain development in Rust) and DApps (off-chain development in TypeScript and Rust). Campus is free to accepted participants, funded by the Polkadot Treasury.
From 2026, completing two or more online micro-credentials is the recommended path into Campus admission, not a hard requirement, but the clearest preparation available.

Can I attend Campus more than once, on different tracks?
Yes. If you completed the Protocol track, you can apply for the DApps track in a future cohort, and vice versa. You still need to pass the track-specific entrance assessment for the new track.
Do I need to complete online credentials before applying to Campus?
Not formally required, but strongly recommended. The online micro-credentials – particularly Cryptography Essentials, Polkadot Cloud Fundamentals, and Building on Polkadot Hub – cover content that Campus assumes you have. Completing them before applying means you spend Campus time going deep rather than catching up.
